Sophie is from Greek Greek-Cypriot decent. Her father is from Syros, Greece and her mother is from Xilophagou, Cyprus. She was born and raised in London.

She studied at London Metropolitan University and has a BA Hons in Design Studies. She went on to work as a photographer for 15 years and specialised in portraiture. During the last 3 years Sophie has been working with clay and has been experimenting with form. She takes inspiration from her Greek heritage which is quite evident in her work.

Sophie Ambelas composes through flows and rough textures the diasporic cultural identity, based on single, multiple, intertwined identities.
